Lampshades can be trimmed for necessity : for example if they are covered in a material (Parchment, Paper or Raffia) that canot be rolled edge, so the edges have to be finished with a trim. Or a trim can be added purely for decorative purpose like a nice contrast of colours or to add in a pop of colour to an interior scheme.

From the age when light shades were made from Goat and animal skins that were stretched over frames and held in place with a gut or leather thong stitched around the edges, this whip technique is now a contemporary edge detail that can add colour and texture detail onto parchment lampshades. When whip stitching the edges the frames are on show, so to compliment the covering we can use coloured frames to elevate the finished lampshade - we can also play with scale by using smaller or bigger stitches set at varying spacing.
